Understanding the Different Types of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder characterized by cyclical shifts in mood, activity, and energy levels. Those with this condition experience highs (mania) and lows (depression) with periods of normal mood.

There are three types of Bipolar Disorders: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Cyclothymia. The differences between each type of Bipolar are the intensities of the mania and the duration of the mood cycles.

  • Bipolar I is characterized by at least one full manic episode that can last for a week or more if untreated. While you do not need to have a depressive episode to receive a Bipolar I diagnosis, many people also experience major depressive episodes. Manic episodes with Bipolar I are intense, often severely impairing daily functions, and can require hospitalization. They may also include psychotic symptoms like delusions.
  • Bipolar II is characterized by depressive episodes with milder elevated moods. Individuals experience hypomania, a less severe form of mania, that lasts at least four days and does not cause major disruptions to their daily lives. Bipolar II causes major depressive episodes that are long-lasting and intense, causing significant impairment or distress.
  • Cyclothymia is a milder form of Bipolar Disorder where the individual is considered chronically unstable. It’s characterized by mild hypomania and mild to moderate depressive symptoms that occur frequently for at least two years. With cyclothymia, the highs and lows are not long enough or severe enough to meet the full clinical criteria required for a hypomanic or major depressive episode, and the mood changes cycle much faster, often shifting within the same day.

Therapeutic Approaches

Treating Bipolar Disorder requires expert knowledge, understanding, and experience with mood disorders. We offer numerous services to support your recovery journey.

Medication management can be crucial for managing bipolar disorder as it serves as a foundation for stability, reduces the risk of hospitalization or self-harm and helps prevent severe mood episode. Medication compliance is essential for those with a Bipolar I diagnosis.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) teaches you to identify negative behaviors and thought patterns and replace them with healthier adaptive habits. Our treatment utilizes strategies like mood monitoring, routine management, and healthy habit forming.

DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based supportive therapy that focuses on mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation, helping individuals with Bipolar Disorder navigate mood shifts and reduce impulsivity.

Family-Focused Therapy

Family-focused therapy educated family members about Bipolar Disorder, improving communication, and helping them recognize early episode warning signs.

Psychoeducation

Provides education about the disorder, including trigger identification and medication management for enhanced self-management.
